darwin beard.gif (41149 bytes)Charles was very close to his children even in his later life. He and his wife played two games of backgammon each evening. Once in a letter to a friend Charles wrote, "Emma, poor creature, has won only 2490 games, whilst I have won, Hurrah, Hurrah, 2795 games." Darwin wrote an autobiography just for his children. Charles practically spent his whole later life in the down house. He spent his time perfecting his studies; thinking up new ideas, and sleeping mostly. The end of his life was depressing for Charles.

Almost all his life Charles had off and on illnesses. As he grew older his health improved. On April 19,1882 Charles Darwin died from heart failure. He was buried in Westminster Abbey, a place of honor.
