darwin's finches.jpg (23379 bytes)On his voyage Darwin noticed that fossils of some extinct species had a close resemblance to the species currently in the area. He thought the current species had come from the extinct ones. Evolution is based on the fact that animals have more offspring than is needed to replace the animal that has given offspring.

Charles kept notebooks on his work. In his "A" notebook was most of his geology. His "B’ notebook was on the many plants and animals. Before long he also had "C, D, and E" notebooks. These notebooks were the basis for The Origin of Species. A breakthrough in evolution was discovered at dinner on the beagle when Charles found out that he was eating a near extinct ostrich. He was able to salvage the head, neck, wings, and feathers. It was later named the Reah Darwin. Also while in the Galapagos Darwin noticed that the idea of extinction leads to food. As an example, all the other kinds of finches would not survive in a habitat that their beaks were not adapted to. Survival of the fittest, that was evolution.
